Still raining, but at least there's waves.

The rain and grey skies are making people anxious, let’s hurry up, get the early rounds over and see the big guys in the finals seems the prevalent attitude. Alas, finals are still a coupla days away with round two wrapping up for both the guys and gals today.
Yesterday in the first half of round two every top seed won their heat. You’d probably think ‘well why wouldn't they, they’re supposed to,' but it’s rare to see every low seed lose, and with all these hyped up rookies, where have the upsets been? Never in ASP history have the top seeds won every heat in round two, but until late this afternoon it was looking like the red rashies were going to do jus that to the unfortunate souls in the white lycra.

The phenomenon continued this morning when an unlucky Matt Wilkinson drew the man who's surfed this break more than anyone, Dean Morrison. Wilko was ripping but unable to finish his waves off while Dingo picked the best of the heat and carved them to bits.
If anyone could break the curse surely it'd be Jay "Bottle" Thompson. Botts lives up the road and was against Kekoa Bacalso who hasn't surfed a board a shortboard in months ‘cos of how much his home breaks on the North Shore have been pumping. But it wasn't to be and Bottle took home a dreaded 33rd.“The Spartan", Michel Bourez was the first of the red jerseys to fall. Californian Pat Gudauskas broke the curse, quipping after "I just thought about it like black jack, red can't win 'em all." Not only did Pat break the curse for the underdogs, but he put a hex on the top seeds, every heat after the Gudauskas verse Bourez battle, saw the top seed go down.
Like Stedman rooster-tails his way into round three. Pic Jones/Stryker
2009's WQS winner Dan Ross downed Ben Dunn, Andy Irons was back to winning form against fellow Kauaian Roy Powers, but far from his best. AI started the heat looking stiff, surfing at 60% of what we know he’s capable of, but after a couple of waves he loosened up and almost looked like he was having fun with the two foot runners. To finish off round two Drew Courtney's big hacks couldn't match Luke Stedman's flow as the last 33rd was handed out for this event.
The low seed smackdown continued in the Roxy Pro, Nikita Robb and Claire Bevilacqua both bungled out in their round two elimination heats in the two heats run of the ladies.
The surf forecast looks promising for tomorrow, stay tuned to the webcast and check back here later for blog, pics and video.
