Nick Carroll's Big Swell Forecast: Nov. 03-10, 2009

Wild and woolly week if you’re living further south than 40°S -- maybe the last wild and woolly week of the year. Two big swell hits for Tasmania and southern NZ, plus some faux-winter westerly gales for Vicco and SA are on the cards. The first gale is thanks to a cutoff low forming near the SA/Vic border; on the 3rd and 4th it’ll blow the house down across south-eastern Australia, particularly in Bass Strait, before dying a rapid death in the southern Tasman Sea. It’ll arrive at the same time as the first of the major swells slugs Tassie, then merge into a very intense low just below New Zealand and blast that part of the world with a wicked supercharged WSWer (just in time for the Storm Surfers film crew’s arrival! Look out boys).

The second swell’s got a bit more promise. It should arrive in Tasmania on November 5, coinciding with much gentler winds from the west and north-west. On the 6th, that swell hits NZ, and while there’s still be a fair bit of wind on it, conditions should allow for some heavy wave action. Keep your eyes peeled for evidence on the Entries page.

Beyond that, there’s an ominously summery look to the forecast charts, with an easterly tradewind trend along the Aussie east coast, and smaller surf coming out of the Indian Ocean in the near term. Check back with us at the beginning of the next forecast period for updates on that.
