Nick Carroll's Big Swell Forecast: Sept 22 - 29, 2009
In a word… Ka-boom. Big surf will smash pretty much every Australasian coast in the coming week to 10 days, with varying effects dependent on local winds. The first region to cop a blasting will be south-west WA, which should see the arrival of a really big groundswell from the SW on the 23rd and 24th. This swell, formed by an intensifying fetch that got a big jump on while moving east from the mid-southern Indian Ocean, will definitely activate all the major bombie reefs in the region; the ugly note may be struck by winds, which will probably blow onshore for much of the swell’s initial long period reign. There is a chance of some quiet time in there, particularly on the 24th. This swell and its associated system will break down somewhat as it moves beneath the continent, but will still hit every southern and western facing coast pretty solidly, and as the fetch fractures, there is a good chance for relatively clean conditions in South Oz, western Vicco and southern Tasmania on the 25th. Tassie’s east coast may also see a healthy sling of dead east groundswell off a cutoff low forecast to form near New Zealand on the 24th. Then it’s the mainland east coast’s turn, with a heavy winter-style low forecast to coalesce near NZ’s South Island around the 27th. It’s still a few days off, but if this low forms more or less close to its forecast position, its western and southwestern flank’s fetch will sling a really big SSE groundswell at all east coast points south of Byron Bay between the 28th and 30th of the month, accompanied by light winds along the coast. Wax up the guns and blow out the impellers, crew, it’s ON.
