A massive $35,000 on the line – and an extra month to earn it. That’s the story behind this year’s Oakley Surfing Life Big Wave Awards. Start date has been shifted forward a month to May 1 to take advantage of late autumn surf on big wave coasts around Oz and NZ. According the event co-ordinator Nick Carroll, “We’ve finalised details of the increased prizemoney and fine-tuned a few other things behind the scenes – no point in waiting for a swell, so boom! The gun’s gone off.”

Awards this year will cover the classic Biggest Wave Ridden and will feature increased prizemoney for Biggest Paddle-in, plus a new Award for Slab of the Year.

All surfers who’ve registered in past years are automatically cleared to go and will be sent special BWA info and entry packs during May.

Surfers who wish to register for the first time should contact Nathan or Nick for further info - contact details are below.

An updated website will be launched shortly. It’ll feature all ride entries as they happen and the stories behind ‘em, plus a bunch of opportunities for viewers to get involved through the 2009/2010 BWA season - stay tuned.

Final day for entries will be Australia Day, January 26, 2010.

For now: check out last year’s incredible finalists: Mark Mathews, Marti Paradisis,  Kerby Brown, Andrew Mooney, Damien 'Taco' Warr and Kobi Graham in the article below.

How are they gonna top this?? We don’t know how either, but we do know they will.
